  • The Superintendent’s School Improvement Zone is an innovative approach to public education to promote high achievement while eliminating low student performance.  The Zone is composed of 39 low-performing schools identified based on percentages of beginning teachers, student mobility, numbers of students in exceptional education programs, and numbers of students with limited English proficiency.
     

  • These schools include 20 elementary schools, as well as 11 middle schools and eight senior high schools.  Together, the 39 schools enrolled 44,287 students in 2002-2003.

  • Additional Compensation - Salary Schedule Unique to the Zone (starting salary at step 1 is $39,930.00 effective January 14, 2005)
  • School-Based Professional Development Teams
  • Coordinated and Coherent Focus on Literacy
  • Participation in a Major Urban Reform Effort
  • Working hours for teachers in Zone schools will be 8 hours and 5 minutes at the elementary level and 8 hours and 20 minutes at the secondary level.

WHAT IS THE ZONE CURRICULUM?

  • Structured curriculum and instructional techniques will be used in the schools.  There also will be an unprecedented focus on literacy in all grades.  Reading material will be uniform across the Zone, and additional help will be provided to students farthest behind in reading comprehension. 
     

  • The Zone will have teams of educators including social workers, school psychologists, literacy and math specialists, college assistance advisors, and community involvement specialists to assist in student development.
